Maersk H2S Safety Services Group’s subsidiary in Italy will be providing Firefighting and Rescue Intervention Team for TotalEnergies EP Italia’s operations in Tempa Rossa Oil Center in Italy.

As part of the three-year contract, Maersk H2S Safety Services will provide all support and response on the front line in case of an accident and emergency. The support will include personnel and emergency vehicle and the regular control, monitoring, and maintenance of the fire and detection systems and rescue equipment within the site.

Tempa Rossa is an oil field located in the Alta Valle del Sauro, in the heart of the Basilicata region, in southern Italy, and is the main activity of TotalEnergies EP Italia (operator with 50%), in partnership with Shell Italia E&P and Mitsui E&P Italia. The plant has a daily production capacity of approximately 50,000 barrels of oil, 230,000 m³ of natural gas, 240 tons of LPG and 80 tons of sulfur. Tempa Rossa also extends to Taranto, where the crude oil is sent via the existing Val d’Agri – Taranto oil pipeline for storage and shipping by sea. The Tempa Rossa production site covers an area of 27 hectares at an altitude of 1,050 meters.

Maersk H2S Safety Services Italia Srl, located in Viggiano, Potenza, was founded in 1997 due to the high concentration of H2S in the Italian wells. The main competencies of the Italian base focus on onshore drilling, safety services in general, and providing safety representatives on-site. Maersk H2S Safety Services Italia is part of the Maersk H2S Safety Services Group, a global provider of gas safety services.

“We are excited to be given the trust and opportunity by TotalEnergies EP Italia to be a part of a significant team at the Tempa Rossa production site, a prominent oil and gas landmark in southern Italy. We look forward to contributing to the safe operations of the site in years to come.” Rocco Carone, General Manager, Maersk H2S Safety Services Italia.

Meeting new people in each project and working in different cultural environments are two of the most enjoyable aspects of my job. I’m Italian, and we like to relate and share our life experiences with others, to get to know colleagues both during the job and outside, for example, when playing football together.

Hydrogen Sulphide is a substantial safety concern in the oil industry, but far from the only gas encountered during drilling operations. This emergency call was about high concentrations of CO gas.

The most common and toxic gasses encountered in the oil industry are H2S, CO, CO2, SO2, and CH4.

Saturday morning we received an emergency call out from a Norwegian operator, as a regular well permanent plug and abandonment job went wrong, prompting a high concentration of CO in the old mud. Inhalation of CO in high concentrations is dangerous, and even deadly in concentrations at or above 12,800 ppm.

Before the arrival of our safety supervisor, the platform mud system had been seriously contaminated with a high concentration of CO and the lack of contingency plans for the presence of CO placed the forthcoming operations under high risk. The safety supervisor’s role was to advise on proper risk assessment for the handling of CO and ensure the operations could continue without jeopardizing the safety of onboard personnel.

Exposure to CO can cause nausea, dizziness, headaches and collapse. Inhalation overexposures may be fatal.
